Guidelines for Writers and Artists
OVERVIEW - YES! Magazine documents how people are creating a more just, sustainable, and compassionate world.  We describe a global society in the process of change, and we craft our issues to reflect that dynamic, creative process.  We welcome submissions that relate directly to this focus.

Each issue of YES! focuses on a single theme, which means that there is a bit of luck involved in submitting a timely article.  Articles that relate to the theme of the upcoming issue have the greatest chance of publication. We tend not to project these themes too far into the future to ensure their relevance, but we announce the next issue’s theme on the back of the current issue.  Check the back of YES! to find out what we are looking for in submissions now.  If you cannot obtain YES! in print, write our office at the address listed below and ask about the current theme.

In the interest of avoiding redundancy, articles that fall within the scope of recently released issues of YES! have almost no chance of publication.  Please see our backissues page for a complete list of past themes.  We do allocate a small portion of our magazine to non-themed pieces.  The best way to ensure that your article fits within our magazine is to submit a query instead of a full article.

YES! is a quarterly publication with a tiny staff.  Please allow at least three months for a response.

CONTENT - Although we do not wish to minimize the problems that face us, YES! is not interested in bemoaning them.  (There are plenty of publications covering that ground.)  Instead, we highlight promising solutions, particularly those that address the structures behind our deepest ecological, social, and political problems.  We do not accept submissions that simply state the author’s opinion of what needs to be fixed and why. Our readers know why we need to move towards sustainability—they want to know what people are doing that is transformational.

We do not accept poetry, fiction, unsolicited book reviews or interview transcripts.  Personal essays are considered only if they are especially timely or illuminate a relevant political or cultural issue.  We will not endorse any candidate or party.  In general, we are looking for groundbreaking articles that bring particularly innovative efforts to light and tell an interesting story.

STYLE - Authors should write in a conversational tone for a general, well-informed audience.  We emphasize personal authenticity, factual accuracy, and telling an engaging story.  The best way to familiarize yourself with our editorial tone is to look at previous articles from YES!, nearly all of which are posted on our website.

COMPENSATION - We provide all our writers and artists with a one-year subscription to the magazine and two additional copies of the issue in which their work appears.  Because we are a nonprofit organization and accept no advertisements, we are able to offer only a modest honorarium.  Occasionally, we commission articles from professional freelance authors at a higher rate.

RIGHTS - We regularly grant editors, teachers, and others permission to reprint articles from YES! for free, and we distribute our articles and images for free via electronic services, including our website.  Because we are eager to spread the message of YES! as widely as we can, we include in our contracts permission to allow reprinting of authors’ work in these ways.

FORMAT - We do not accept electronic submissions unless the author is working from overseas.  Please mail hard copies of submissions and queries to the address listed below.   We recommend that you send queries and proposals rather than completed submissions, but please accompany queries with a writing sample.

Features are generally 1,500-2,500 words in length, and sidebars usually 100-250.  Photos are encouraged.  Illustrations must be reproducible in a single color.  Please do not send any original images or artwork.
